Empire Magazine- Analysis

Overview

Empire Magazine is a british film magazine published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media, first published in May 1989. Since then it has become one of the most recognizable, influential film magazines in the UK, reaching as much as as 692,000 people between April 2019 and March 2020 alone.

Cover Analysis

The magazine makes use of different colour themes for each issue, in this example it is mainly red, white and blue. This ensures the entire magazine cover both stands out due to its boldness but also be visually appealing and consistent to the theme of whatever the cover is about.

The main focus of the cover is the actors, standing in front of the magazine title itself, using those actor's fame to boost sales and catch attention of fans of their work. The title being placed in the background is an emphasis of this, ensuring the actors aren't obscured and shows them to acknowledging that customers purchase magazines for recognizable names and faces rather than the brand of the magazine.

Another aspect of the cover used well is Hierarchy, ensuring that certain headlines are read before others in a certain order, subtly indicated through size. For example, the biggest text on the cover besides the title is "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" this is emphasized as it currently the most popular, trending show they have to discuss, and since it has such a large audience it is used to catch attention and suede people into buying the magazine for this reason. This is why the headline at the top of the magazine, yet in smaller text is about Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, very famous recognizable names who commonly work together, drawing an even wider audience for people who are also fans of their work. Utilizing celebrity/brand endorsement to ensure readers buy the magazine to see something they're curious about and to do with their interests.

Collage Images

This next project is on Collages of images, I gathered many images all related to a single theme (in this case, christmas) and collaged them all together, using editing techniques on the borders of the image to soften then and allow them to fade into the background and overlap each other, creating the desired effect and a visually appealing collage of images related to a theme.

Photoshop Basics- Filters

For this project, I made use of the different filters for pictures available on Photoshop, by clicking Filter and checking under the 'Artistic' tab, I was shown a long list of available filters to use to manipulate the image, such as Dry Brush, Film Grain, Neon Glow, Watercolour, etc. to add distinct styles and feels to the images.

Outlining Text on a Line

For these next images, we tried out curving text over a line in an image, making use of the way text can be shaped and manipulated in Photoshop, such as in the first image, in which I used the Elipse tool to outline the moon and then select it to type along the curve. Meaning that the elipse line the text is following is now invisible and the text appears outlining the moon in the image.

Similarly, in the second image, I outlined the mountain, however since the mountain is a much more complex shape I had to draw out the points across the outline of the mountain by hand, then typing across it. This proved challenging as it is difficult to properly use the tool and it allows very little room for error, however I accomplished this in the end.

WARP

FX

FREE TRANSFORM

For these pieces of work, I made use of the numerous basic features of photo manipulation on Photoshop, using Warp, fx and Free Transform respectively for each variation.

Warp is used to to quite simply, warp the text into different shapes as to add visual interest and possibly be used to fit a theme of whatever image it could be utilised in.

fx is used to add outline/style to text on a document. glow, shadow, stroke, etc for both the inside and outside of the text and make pieces of text stand out on a page, creating hierarchy to guide the readers eye by catching interest and causing them to read it first.

Free Transform changes the angle and size of the text, to make text bigger or smaller or even put it on a slant if need be to create a visually engaging image.

Approaches to Advertising- Unit 20

Digital Media Unit 20- Approaches to Advertising

Kieran Riley- 25/02/2021

Task 1- List celebrities and the products they endorse

  • Matt Damon- Nespresso

  • Neil Patrick Harris- Heineken Light

  • Justin Timberlake- McDonalds

  • Taylor Swift- Diet Coke

  • Britney Spears- Pepsi

  • 50 Cent- Vitamin Water

  • Michael Jordan- Nike

  • Jay Z- Ace of Spades Champagne

  • William Shatner- Priceline

  • Drake- Sprite

  • Shaquille O’Neil- Taco Bell

  • Ellen DeGeneres- Samsung

  • DJ Tiesto- 7 Up

  • George Foreman- George Foreman Grills

Task 2- George Clooney Nespresso Task

1) The target audience for this product is coffee/espresso drinkers who have a rich, elegant taste and wish to enjoy the expensive luxuries of life.

2) A good replacement to George Clooney would likely be Brad Pitt, as he is similar enough to George Clooney in that he is considered incredibly handsome and good looking, as well as being immensely wealthy. The main difference being that he is slightly younger than Clooney.

3) An alternate approach to this advertising this product could be to make it seem less expensive in luxury and focus on pricing it reasonably and therefore making it more accessible to wider-spread, working class audiences.

4)The beverage I choose to advertise is Red Bull and to endorse it I would pick someone like Tom Holland or Finn Wolfhard. This is due to the fact that many energy drinks such as Red Bull have a primary audience of teenagers and young adults, and so having the product endorsed by a celebrity who is also quite young and therefore more relatable is best for selling the product to the most profitable demographic
